A Solar Micro Plant (SMP) is a small installation betwwen 4 and 12 solar panels, which empowers a small community or a facility and provides electricity for basic needs such as home lighting, running a TV, some computers, charging mobile phones. Solar Micro Plants are very popular in areas where there is no electricity grid or where the power supply is not reliable. It can be as a back-up system during blackout periods (for example in the case of a war, there would be very difficult access to oil for running a diesel generator). It can also be the only power source available (for example a village which is far from all electricity grid would have its SMP for the local electricity needs).

SMPs appear to be the pratical electrification means and the most wanted solution for rural electrification programs. Some SMPs are for the specific use of water pumping for agricultural use.
